New article on the role of emotions in social movements

mws_okladka_2014_4My latest paper (in Polish) on the role of emotions in social movements (the case of Polish fathers’ rights movement and breast cancer survivors) has been recently published in Studia Socjologiczne 4/2014 (215) and will is available here Full text The article results from research on the role of emotions in the constitution, character and dynamic of contemporary social movements. The paper is based on the cases of the fathers’ rights movement and the breast cancer survivors movement in Poland and is to a large extent the result of qualitative sociological research conducted with activists from the above mentioned movements between 2009 and 2012. Moreover, the analysis of the gathered material is preceded by an outline of the status of emotions in (Polish) sociology and the state of affairs in Polish research on the presented social movements. If You are interested in our findings and cannot read in Polish do not hesitate to contact me.

Interdisciplinary Conference “Political Masculinities and Social Transition”

The University of Koblenz-Landau is an organiser of Interdisciplinary Conference on Masculinities: Political Masculinities and Social Transition which will take place in Landau/Pfalz between 27th and 29th November 2015. The main aims of the conference are: 1)“examining the characteristics of political masculinities in different transitional societies”, 2) getting know if there is a “certain trajectory in the characteristics of political masculinities during social transition that can be identified across cultures and times”. International Conference on Masculinities “Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality”

The Center of the Study of Men and Masculinities is an organiser of International Conference on Masculinities: Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality which will take place in New York City between 6th and 8th March 2015. The main aims of the conference are: “To infuse men’s activism in support of gender justice with the rigor and insights of the most up-to-date research;  (2) to increase cooperation and ties between academic researchers who address various gender issues, and feminist activists, practitioners, and advocates.” The deadline for submitting proposals is October, 31st. ImageThe Editors of the Special Issue of Studia Humanistyczne AGH „Men and masculinities in the European dimension” warmly welcome scholarly contributions from all interested in critical studies on men and masculinities in Europe. In recent years in social and cultural studies voices about rapid changes in social relations, including the gender dimension, have increased. These changes have lead Karl Marx’s statement “All that is solid melts into air” to seem highly topical, especially when it comes to the recent challenge of the social gender dualism (Connell 2002). As a result of the inversion of the traditional gender paradigm, contemporary academic discourse implies the existence of non-typical, ambiguous “femininities” and “masculinities” and thereby analyses and justifies the coexistence of diverse, complementary and/or contrasted types of gender identities (Connell 2005).
